Prepare your machine

The first step in learning how to oil a Singer 4423 sewing machine is to prepare the machine for oiling. Begin by turning off the power switch, or unplugging the machine from its electrical connection. Remove the needle plate cover from the machine. Use a Phillips or flat head screwdriver to remove any screws that may be holding the plate in place. Once the plate is removed, set aside any sewing equipment or items that could become a hazard if oil were to come in contact with them.

Check the oil level

The next step when oiling your Singer 4423 is to check the oil level. Inspect the main parts of the machine including the exterior, the sewing arm, the dangling feed needles, and the bobbin area and their oil levels. The exterior should have an oil port that can be easily seen. The next is the sewing arm, which should feel and smell lubricated. Finally, move on to the bobbin area and feed needles; they should be well-oiled.

Clean and brush out old oil

Before adding any new oil to the machine, it’s important to clean and brush out any old or used oil that is currently in the machine. This is done using the brush attachment for the machine and a nearby dustpan. Brush thoroughly in all parts of the machine and make sure that all old oil is entirely gone.

Apply the oil

When the machine has been sufficiently cleaned and wiped, it is time to apply the oil. Singer recommends using only high-grade sewing machine oil for the machine. Start with the exterior, or oil port of the machine. Insert the nozzle of the oil into the port and give it a few squeezes until the exterior begins to feel well lubricated. Once the exterior is done, move on to the interior.
