Oil is essential for the longevity of any sewing machine, and the Singer Heavy Duty Sewing Machine is no exception. Oiling the essential parts of the machine regularly is essential for maintenance — and eventually, to prevent any more invasive, expensive repairs down the line.

The main parts that need to be oiled, as recommended by Singer, are the feed dog, the shuttle race, and the bobbin case. As outlined earlier, it is important to only use sewing machine oil. Singer also recommends that you never use 3-in-1 oil, or any other type of oil such as cooking oil, as these may damage the machine.

Before oiling the sewing machine, Singer recommends that you turn it off and unplug it; dust the machine with a brush and/or cloth; check the needle to ensure it’s secured in place; and replace the bobbin case and stitch plate. Once you have done this, you can begin the oiling process.

The feed dog is essential for transporting the fabric through the machine — so it needs to be in good condition. Singer recommends applying 1–2 drops of oil to each dog. To do so, use a dropper and apply the oil to the openings on the feed dog (while making sure you don’t apply any oil to the stitch plate).

In an oscillating shuttle machine — such as the Singer HD machine — the bobbin fits into a shuttling race. This should be lubricated with 1–2 drops of oil, with the machine off and unplugged. Open the bobbin case and add one drop of oil to each side of the race.
