Sewing machines have become necessary household items for people who are interested in sewing and crafting garments. Sewing machines can also be used for embroidery, but it is important to carefully choose the best machine for this purpose. Most people are under the impression that any regular sewing machine can be used to embroider, but this is not always the case.

Embroidery is a laborious and delicate process of stitching designs and patterns onto fabric or clothing. The common thread is usually a thicker, heavier cotton, wool or silk thread and the needle has to be larger and durable enough to handle it. Regular sewing machines are designed to work with medium weight cotton thread and is not suitable for embroidery. To successfully embroider a piece of garment, a special embroidery machine is required.

The special embroidery machines have a larger needle bar and a larger needle size which is specifically designed for larger and heavier thread. It is a must to use a special machine in order to achieve good results with delicate embroidery. The tension control of the machine is also very important as it must be set to accommodate the thicker threads. If the tension setting is not accurate, your embroidered work will suffer.

An embroidery machine should also have different types of feed dogs and presser feet to accommodate different types of stitches such as satin stitch and free-motion embroidery. The feed dogs are responsible for controlling how the material moves beneath the fabric and the presser feet are responsible for controlling the amount of pressure on the fabric. Without the necessary types of feed dogs and presser feet, the embroidery will not look perfect.
