History

A-1 Sewing Machine Co is a privately owned business in the sewing industry. Founded in 1903, it is the longest continuously serving family-run business in the United States. A-1 was founded by Ernest Palmer, a respected leather craftsman who emigrated from Europe in 1892 and opened a shop in a small Massachusetts town. The company began with a small storefront boutique specializing in leather goods and custom hand-crafted clothing.

The company quickly gained a following and Palmer began selling locally manufactured sewing machines. Over time, his small shop changed over to a full-fledged sewing machine business, selling and repairing machines, as well as selling machine parts and accessories. By the late 1920s, A-1 Sewing Machine Co had stores located throughout the eastern United States, including Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Palmer was a true innovator, as he saw potential in the sewing machine industry and adapted his business to match its changing needs. He began selling a variety of popular models, including the Singer, Wilcox-Gibbs, and White models. He soon developed his own line of machines, called the A-1.

Today, A-1 Sewing Machine Co has the largest selection of sewing machines in the country and has become a leader in the industry. They carry a wide variety of name-brand machines, parts, and supplies, as well as offering expert advice and service. Additionally, they offer classes on sewing techniques, craft projects, and other needle work.
