Today, many people are familiar with the distinctive sound of a sewing machine. The fabric is placed on the machine head, where it is stitched together using a needle and thread. But why is fabric used on the machine head?

One reason is that fabric provides a smooth surface for the needle to travel through. Metal surfaces can be too smooth, causing the needle to slip and not create a proper stitch. Fabric also has some “give” to it, which helps the needle penetrate the fabric more easily.

Another reason is that fabric can help protect the surface of the sewing machine. If the needle were to come into contact with a hard surface, it could damage the machine. Fabric absorbs some of the impact, which helps to prolong the life of the machine.

Finally, fabric on the machine head can help to keep the needle and thread in place. If the needle were to come loose, it could become tangled in the fabric and cause the sewing machine to jam.
