Most patterns available in stores are multi-sized, meaning they include a range of sizes within the same envelope. To determine which size you need to make, you first need to take your measurements. Once you have your measurements, you then need to compare them to the size chart on the back of the pattern envelope. This will tell you which size(s) in the pattern will work for your measurements.

Now that you know which size(s) you need to make, it’s time to transfer the pattern markings to your fabric. To do this, you will need to lay out the pattern pieces on your fabric, making sure to line up the fabric grainlines with the grainlines on the pattern pieces. Once the pattern pieces are in place, you can start pinning them or weight them down with pattern weights.

Once the pattern pieces are pinned or weighted down, you can start tracing the pattern markings onto the fabric with a chalk pencil or some other type of marking tool. Be sure to trace all of the relevant markings, such as notches, darts, and pocket placements.

When you’re done tracing the pattern markings, you can remove the pattern pieces and cut out your fabric pieces along the chalk lines.
